JAMES ZHU

James Zhu is a 16-year-old pianist who has been studying with Ms. Clare Yuan since he was 10 years old. From an early age, James displayed a remarkable passion for the piano and a determination to take on challenges. At just 10 years old, he performed a small solo recital, a feat accomplished only one year after starting piano lessons. Known for his exceptional ear for sound, James has earned awards at local festivals, showcasing his musical talent and dedication. During the pandemic, despite being in China, James continued his lessons online, never once wavering in his commitment to learning the piano. Even during academically busy times, his persistence and love for music never faltered. James returned to in-person lessons in 2024 after coming back to Canada to attend school. He has since decided to pursue music as a potential career path. He is now aiming to attend music school, recognizing the deep joy and fulfillment he finds in playing piano. Additionally, James has aspirations of composing his own music.

Outside of music, James enjoys a variety of activities, including skiing, watching movies and TV shows, and playing badminton. His advice to new piano learners is, β€œFor people starting to learn music, I think you should train your ears and actively listen to music, and develop a strong connection between the sound and the fingers.” At the age of 10, James was in the audience at the Chan Centre for the Gifted Artist Concerto Gala, watching some of Clare's former students perform with an orchestra. This experience inspired him and sparked a wish to have the same opportunity. When James heard about a chance to perform with an orchestra, he was determined to be a part of it. He also earned the opportunity to play with the Chilliwack Symphony Orchestra at the end of May. In addition, James will be giving a fundraising piano solo recital in May to share his passion for music. He wishes that you will all enjoy his performance today.
